Clare Winsten, (Clara Birnberg), 1894-1989, Head of George Bernard Shaw, signed pencil on paper, 30 x 22cm. Winsten studied at the Slade and became the only female member of the 'Whitechapel Boys' circle of artists, Clare was a neighbour of George Bernard Shaw, provided illustrations for some of his books and painted him several times, as well as producing bronze busts of Shaw held at the British Museum and the Shaw Theatre
